This is the relationship between the witch mother, Joanna Beauchamp, and her witch daughters, Ingrid Beauchamp and Freya Beauchamp. In the Pilot, we learn that Joanna hasn't told her daughters yet of their true witch heritage, but it was to protect them. However, she knew, along with her sister Wendy Beauchamp (Joanna's daughters' aunt), that she could not contain their powers. She only hid them from the truth because she loves her daughters, deeply, and is tired of experiencing her curse with them. Their curse is that whenever her daughters die, she will become pregnant again. After centuries of losing them constantly, she was tired and saddened by it. This time is different, however, being her daughters usually die around or in their 30s. Ingrid and Freya are still healthy, living witches.
Joanna first reveals to her daughters that they're witches. The witch daughters spend the rest of the season learning magic from both their mother and learning from their newly discovered aunt that they had, Wendy Beauchamp. They also battle outside threats, like Joanna's enemy from years ago, Penelope Gardiner, who's father she killed so many years ago. In the end, Joanna and Wendy kill Penelope.
